Care & Maintenance Guide

VMS Carpets · Preserving Your Investment

A hand-knotted VMS carpet is a living investment. With the right care, it will grow more beautiful with every passing year — deepening in colour, softening underfoot, and outlasting everything else in your home.

Follow this guide to protect your carpet's fibres, colours, and structure for decades to come.

Daily & Weekly Care
Vacuuming

Vacuum gently 1–2 times per week along the pile direction. Use a suction-only attachment — never a beater bar or rotating brush, which can pull and break individual knots.

Rotation

Rotate your carpet 180° every 6–12 months to ensure even wear and prevent one side from fading more than the other in areas with direct sunlight.

Fringe Care

Do not vacuum the fringe — it can tangle and fray. Gently comb it by hand or use a soft brush. Never tuck fringe under the carpet.

Underlay

Always use a quality non-slip underlay. It prevents movement, reduces wear on the knot structure, and adds cushioning. Replace the underlay every 3–5 years.

Spills & Stain Removal
Act immediately. The faster you respond to a spill, the less likely it is to become a permanent stain. Blot — never rub — to avoid spreading and pushing liquid deeper into the pile.
  • Liquid spills: Blot from the outer edge inward using a clean white cloth. Absorb as much liquid as possible before applying any cleaner.
  • Solid spills: Carefully scrape up solids with a spoon or blunt knife, working from the outside in. Then blot any residue.
  • Cleaning solution: Mix 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Apply sparingly with a white cloth, blotting gently.
  • Rinse: Blot with clean cold water to remove soap residue. Do not over-wet — excess moisture can damage the foundation and cause mould.
  • Dry: Lay a clean dry towel over the area and press firmly. Allow to air-dry completely. Use a fan if needed — never a hair dryer.
  • For wine, coffee or tea: Add a small amount of white vinegar to your cleaning solution to help lift tannin-based stains.
Do's & Don'ts
Do
  • Vacuum regularly along the pile direction
  • Rotate every 6–12 months for even wear
  • Use a quality non-slip underlay
  • Blot spills immediately with a white cloth
  • Allow carpet to dry fully after any cleaning
  • Use professional cleaning every 2–3 years
  • Keep away from direct prolonged sunlight
  • Use furniture coasters under heavy legs
Don't
  • Use a beater bar or rotating brush vacuum
  • Rub or scrub a spill — always blot
  • Use harsh chemical cleaners or bleach
  • Over-wet the carpet when spot cleaning
  • Fold the carpet — always roll for storage
  • Place in areas with constant heavy moisture
  • Drag heavy furniture across the carpet
  • Machine wash or steam clean at home
Sunlight, Humidity & Environment
  • Sunlight fading is the most common cause of colour change. Use UV-filtering window treatments, or rotate the carpet regularly to equalise any fading.
  • Humidity: Maintain indoor humidity between 40–60%. Very dry air can cause fibres to become brittle; excessive dampness risks mould in the foundation.
  • Underfloor heating: Carpets can be used over underfloor heating, but keep the temperature below 27°C and ensure the room is adequately ventilated.
  • Pets: Trim pet claws regularly to avoid snagging. Clean pet accidents immediately — use an enzyme-based cleaner to neutralise odours without damaging wool fibres.
Understanding Shedding & Sprouting
  • Initial shedding is completely normal in new wool carpets. Short fibres loosen during the first 6–12 months of use and vacuuming. This is not a defect and will stop naturally.
  • Sprouting occurs when a single longer fibre loop rises above the pile. Never pull it — use sharp scissors to trim it level with the surrounding pile.
  • If shedding persists beyond 12 months or is excessive, contact VMS Carpets at info@vmscarpets.com — this may be covered under warranty.
Professional Cleaning
  • We recommend a professional hand-wash clean every 2–3 years by a specialist in hand-knotted oriental carpets. Do not use standard carpet cleaning companies.
  • For cleaning referrals in your city, contact us at info@vmscarpets.com and we will recommend a vetted specialist.
  • Never dry-clean a hand-knotted wool or silk carpet — the solvents can damage natural dyes and weaken fibres.
  • After professional cleaning, allow the carpet to dry flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, before placing back on the floor.
Long-Term Storage
  • Always roll your carpet — never fold it. Folding creates permanent creases in the foundation that are very difficult to reverse.
  • Roll the carpet pile-side inward, around an acid-free cardboard tube if possible.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton or muslin — never plastic, which traps moisture and causes mould.
  • Store horizontally in a cool, dry, dark location. Never store vertically (standing on end) as this stresses the foundation.
  • Place cedar blocks or natural moth repellent sachets nearby to deter insects — never directly in contact with the carpet.
  • Check stored carpets every 3–6 months for signs of moisture, insects, or odour.
